We would like other members that do magic in their clowning, or who are learning magic to include in their routines, to bring one or two effects to share with us all or to practice in front of an audience or to get some help with them. It'll be a lot of fun to learn some more magic to use in your show. Let's all bring some neat items for "SHOW AND TELL".

Last Month

Our own Candy "Butterscotch" Will taught us basic face painting techniques and her "subjects" enjoyed being painted. She was a wealth of information. She also brought her face painting boards to show to us. She has these out when she is face-painting so that people can pick out which "picture" they want her to paint on them. Also, contact her if you would like her to make up one of her boards for you. Candy is always willing to help people. Thank you candy for a simply wonderful demonstration.

This N' That From President Pam

Each and every month we will be having this "question to ponder". We meet at All-American Balloon and we need to work with them. Their store closes BEFORE each meeting. Thus, they have to bring a cashier back to the store and pay them for being there for us. Some months we may need LOTS of balloons. Other months we do not need balloons. So monthly, I need us to decide if we need a cashier present the following month at our meeting. We would basically know if we were going to need balloons the following month. All-American Balloon is VERY GOOD to us so we need to be respectful to their needs also. And speaking of being respectful of their needs, carry this out in your clowning gigs. The more you respect the wishes of the one that has hired you (within reason of course), word about this DOES pass around and adds a positive point to your personal character (AND MORE GIGS!). My sister is a high fashion model and I use to drive her to her "shoots" and interviews when she was just starting out in 9th grade. I do not have to tell you how a good percentage of models (and "entertainment types") act like GODS and would argue with the photographers and clients, as they wanted to "DO IT THEIR WAY". My sister would basically "go with the flow" and has a nice personality. And when the photographers would get calls to do a shoot and the client would say, "Get a model for us", she would be the one chosen because she worked well with the photographer. And thus, the client would like her work and that would get the photographer more work from the client, and future jobs for my sister. IT PAYS TO BE RESPECTFUL OF OTHERS AND THEIR WISHES!
May is the Swap Meet and Club Elections. Members in good standing may host a table at our annual Swap Meet for a charge of $5.00 per table. -President Pam

A QUESTION THAT IS HARD TO ANSWER: Do ugly people take good driver license photos?

Bob Berky

BOB BERKY - This "Theatrical clown with extraordinary class" has entertained audiences all over the world. A quote from the Hong Kong Festival reads " Laughter it was. Unadulterated, uninhibited roars of hysteria, mind you...and the magician: who transcended all age, culture and language barriers to reduce the lot of us to a convulsing mass was Bob Berky."

If you are interested in seeing Bob Berky at La Mirada Theatre you can purchase seats on-line (see link above) or by calling the Box Office at (562) 944-9801 or (714) 994-6310.
We will be in ORCHESTRA Row R for the 1:30 show. Tickets are $8.00 each with $1.00 per ticket postage and handling.

FOOD - FOOD - FOOD!

We want to thank Paulette Rosen for her wonderful "Irish" food at our march meeting. It was scrumptious. Pam House provided the dessert. Did you all go home with a bit o' Irish in you?

And at our March meeting John "Spots The Clown" did volunteer to bring the food for our April meeting. Thank you very much John! Who will bring the food for the following months? This brings in money to our club treasury. So step up to the plate and volunteer for one of the months to bring the food. Or even a group can bring the food for one month. Your club is only as good as each and every one of you make it.

COAI NEWS by Candy

Every year, Clowns of America International invites members from around the world to send in a nomination for Clown of the Year. It is that time of the year again and it is not really that much work to do. There are some wonderful clowns out there, I would pick a few myself and send them in as I have done for the last three years, but it should not be up to me, the Regional Vice President, to do this, it should be up to each and every member to access all the wonderful things our fellow clowns have done who are members of COAI. I can name quite a few myself, but I am hoping that this year many of you will take the initiative to write a wonderful nomination package of a COAI clown who represents COAI, works to make the community better with clowning, and goes out of their way to teach other clowns the ins and outs of clowning with enthusiasm and with no thought but to help the clowning community. The requirements are to have a biography of the nominee with a picture of the nominee in clown and out of clown. A minimum of five letters with a maximum of ten letters of nominations from fellow COAI members who have known the nominee for a while and of course the nominating letter from the nominator. The nominee needs to be a member of COAI for at least five years for consideration. If anyone would like to find out more about the criteria, go to www.coai.org and click on the left side under "about us". Then click on "Clown of the Year". There you will find everything you need to make your decision for nominating possibly the next "Clown of the Year" and don't forget the deadline is no later than September 1st.
Hope to see you all in Grand Rapids!
