Wise Words from Wendy

Last months artist was Phillip Briggs, and he was informative and interactive with everyone. He is a man of many talents and has a heart to go with it. His unicycling was funny and his antics to telling a story had us in stitches. He is one funny guy. Visit him on Jumboshrimpcircus.com to see where they'll be next. Thanks Phillip

We are having a creative artist this month. Be prepared to be in an interactive and entertaining workshop; we all need more movement, don’t we? I do anyway. His show will make you laugh and tap your feet and get you creative with things around the house. Everyone just needs to find what they like and are good at (practice) He teaches classes in LA. too; and they in turn become the clown/entertainer  that’s already inside waiting to come out; to give a child a smile... Street Beat provides a high impact percussion show that will have the entire audience laughing and dancing. He interacts with the crowd throughout the show. He plays on found percussion and gets people of all ages to listen in on same wave length, finding music and pleasure in what is normally related to noise and confusion. His message: When everything becomes percussive, that can carry over into the way we live our lives- everything has possibilities beyond its limits. Ben Hansen-Street Beat Producer

If anyone can help me with Egg-Splosion in Brea April 7th, please come. We need some to blow up helium balloons from 8am-9:30; no later; has to be up. Help gets breakfast. You can clown around helping the Brea community and The Cause. If you can’t help, come and enjoy from 10-1. Let it shine, Wendy

Medical Clowning

I love being a clown, but have realized for a long time that to be a medical clown takes special training.  When I visited Israel three years ago, I had the opportunity to meet one of the special clowns at Laniado Hospital in Netanya.  She told me about the Patch Adams School that took quite a long time to give training.

Today, I read more.  Medical clowns have become a common sight in Israeli hospitals over the past decade, adding a dose of laughter to patients facing difficult times.  Now, some of the country’s 36 medical clowns who call themselves “Dream Doctors” have decided that they want their antics to be taken more seriously by the medical establishment.  To that end, they have helped establish the world’s first BA degree in Medical Clowning in the theater department at the University of Haifa.  There, the first 19 students are providing that laughter is indeed among the best medicines.

I say “Kol Hakavod”—Hebrew for “more power to you.”

COAI News by Candy

Hello again fellow COAI members!

Are you getting ready to go to Springfield, MO?  It’s getting really close now….April 24tht through the 29th and I have so much to do myself!  Besides being on the board as the South West Regional Vice President, I am also the Junior Joey Chair, and I am putting together classes for the great teachers who have signed up to teach!  If you are going, please make sure to come by and say HI whenever you get a chance, I would love to chat with you!

One of the wonderful things about being the Junior Joey Chair for the COAI convention is working with the Junior Joeys, setting up their classes with the other teachers and myself, and preparing them for the Showcase which now includes the “Red Nose” Competition.  Last year as the juniors were doing their showcase on Saturday afternoon, they were also being critiqued by the Red Nose coaches.  It was a very hot day in Louisiana and even though it was hot, the juniors did a wonderful job!  It makes me proud to see these young clowns perform with such enthusiasm!

If any of you haven’t thought about going to convention, please take the time to come to Springfield, MO.  The Alley President of MOStuff, Jay, has so many surprises in store and over 78 classes with a truck load of vendors to make your clown convention experience complete.

Hope to see you there and see you down the road!

Candy Will

SW Regional Vice President
