This Month
The topic is healing with love and laughter. Lou Gordon is 81 years
young and a retired registered nurse who keeps her RN license current.
She has been in the field since 1941. She has been in entertainment
20 plus plus plus years and her clown name is "Lu-C-Luv".
She has a wealth of information and as she always says, "words
of wisdom for the clown".
Be prepared to learn, learn, learn. She will be interacting with whomever
wants to participate and be sure to bring paper and pencils for note
taking.
How many of you can really still do the splits? Or can you still do
somersaults? Lou still can. And have you won awards with your baton
twirling? Lou has!
Be prepared to come with your brain in full operation, as she will teach
you lots!

Last Month
Pam House our esteemed president told us
about her trip to the Circus Museum in Wisconsin. Its collections are
owned by the Wisconsin Historical Society, but privately managed by
the not-for-profit circus world museum foundation. Most fascinating
was the stories of how they are restoring the antique wagons from the
great circus parades. Circus World Museum is home to more than 200 priceless
circus parade wagons. Pam also went to the State Fair Grounds in Milwaukee
to see the National Clown Hall of Fame. Unfortunately, they had moved
it from Grand Avenue Mall and did not have everything out for the public.

This N' That From President Pam
This will be to the point! You asked for demonstrators
that will teach - you got it! Lou will be teaching us in august. In
September it will be Skippy Dee Clown and in October Nancy Grey, both
teaching you. So you must come to the meeting with your brain ready
to learn and pen and paper to take "lot's o' notes". More
about the next two months at the meeting. And another hard to answer
question from Steve Taylor and David ginn -"if ham comes from pigs,
why do hamburgers come from cows?" And think about where we want
to hold our December holiday party? Any ideas, volunteers?
Those of us who went to the Ringling Brothers &
Barnum & Bailey Circus at the Staples Center on July 20th LOVED
IT! And ask Skippy Dee Clown about Ronald and Food! And we had three
members of the Joy Clowns from Seal Beach Leisure World who took the
Blue Line with us. Esther Luskin is 92 year young and she was faster
than all of us. WAY TO GO ESTHER! She is a can can dancer and a new
clown.
Another Unanswerable Question
"If ham comes from pigs, why do hamburgers come from cows?
(200 questions that are hard to answer! / Steve Taylor & David
Ginn.)

COAI NEWS by Candy
Charlie Award, Clown of the Year, these are two areas of COAI that any
COAI member can be involved in. The Charlie Award is given to COAI Alleys
OR individual members for records kept about what was done during clown
week. An album of pictures and articles with possible City Declarations
are what should be inside. They need to be finished and turned in before
October 1st to the Director Of Membership, Bonnie Love. Check your New
Calliope in the front for her contact information.
Clown of the Year is bestowed upon one special COAI member (the board
is NOT included) from a list of members sent in by their COAI peers.
A total of at least five but no more than ten letters should be submitted
with a biography of the nominee and two pictures, one in clown and one
in civilian clothing. I know there are many great COAI clown members
right here in our region that should be considered for this prestigious
award. Please take a little bit out of your time to contact the necessary
nominators for the clown you feel deserves this award. The Southwest
can to be more involved with COAI and I know all of you are very active.
I am not allowed to nominate anyone anymore, so please take the initiative.
If anyone needs help with this, I will gladly be there for any questions
and/or assistance. Happy summer clowning and please STAY COOL!

The Art Of Trade Shows
PACING
After learning what the client expects you to do in relation to the
customers and product, you need to determine your pacing for your act.
In general, trade shows want to move traffic, so your act will be shorter
than a stage act. How much shorter is usujally determined by the client's
need. It may be better a three-minute act with two tricks that you repeat
over and over all day, or a 12-minute act that you do once each half
hour.
In some cases, you will have customers who will move on quickly and
others who will stay around and linger. The ones who move on are probably
deciding quickly whether this booth /; product/demonstration is worth
their time. If you don't catch their attention very early in the act,
you'll loose them altogether. The lingerers will be easier to hold but
they fall into two categories: those with a true interest in the clients
booth/product (eg. Likely customer) and stallers (the ones who came
to the affair and are out to get all the magic shows and coctail shrimp
they can get while spending as little money as possible). Your show
should be long enough to entice real potential customers and not so
long as to clog up the booth with non-customers.

FOOD - FOOD - FOOD!
Thank you,
Alma "Candy" and Alice "Honey" for the wonderful
food last month. John Whiteriver and Pam House will be bringing
the food to the August meeting. It seems that "the same people"
seem to be bringing the food next month. I know that many of you
drive really far to come to the meetings and this would be dinner
for you. But we need everyone to be considerate of each other. Next
month, if nobody signs up for the food, we will not have the "regulars"
jump in to do the food. We will just not have any food in September.
Then, without food at the September meeting, we can decide right
then and there if we want to have food each month. And my slogan
is: "Your club is only as good as you make it". Sooo.
. . . You are the ones who are the ultimate decision makers on if
we have food or not. It is your choice! Well
?
