COAI News by Candy

Hello Fellow Funny Business Members,
Although Clowns of America International was voted down two meetings ago, guess what?  We are still a Clowns of America International Alley.  As long as we have the COAI number and report to the Director of Alleys with the membership numbers, we are still an alley.  I will make sure of that.  OH we may not have everyone join, but that’s okay.  We are just not considered 100 percent.  The debate for 100 percent alleys goes on every year among the membership and all clowns who don’t feel that the cost of COAI is worth it.  Obviously they haven’t experienced the camaraderie among COAI members at conventions, and I don’t mean just the COAI conventions either.  It has become more and more prevalent at the Western Region convention and at the gatherings at other alleys in the Southwest.  It is a good feeling to know we have a common background and can share articles written and knowledge learned just from being a member of Clowns of America International.  I try to do my best for all the members in the Southwest region and if there is a concern you all know who you can talk to.  The only way that the 100 percent rule can be removed is to have it put on the agenda for the general membership meeting at the COAI yearly convention and vote on it there.  Attend some conventions with me, I’ll make sure you are welcome and enjoy it and also make it your chance to express and vote on your opinion about the 100 percent rule or any other issues.  At the meeting in New Orleans in 2006 the rule was brought before the membership again.  It was voted down as it has been for quite a while.  The membership seems to think it is a good rule.  Any questions?  Call and talk to the president, or any of the executive board members. They will tell you the pros and cons personally.  In the meantime, I am here and will remind all COAI members what COAI offers throughout the year as I do in every posting.  Thank you to those who are COAI and enjoy the benefits.  I’m here for YOU!

Happy International Clown WEEK!  I hope you all have plans to celebrate!  Remember this is about bringing clowning out to the public and showing them all how wonderful clowns can be!  Keep track of your activities, take pictures, write stories about what you did, put them in a scrap book and please try to get your local town mayor to send a “Clown Week” Proclamation to you.  The more we promote Clown Week the better the reputation clowns have for bringing fun and laughter into a sometimes unhappy and stressful world.  After Clown Week is over and you have all your pictures and articles in place in your scrapbook, make sure to send them to the director of Membership, Bonnie Love before October 1st.  These will be critiqued, winners picked and then displayed at the next International convention in 2008 in Richmond Virginia!  Good Luck and please make sure to have FUN!

Your COAI Southwest Regional Vice President,

Butterscotch

WITH MORE & MORE DISASTERS HAPPENING AROUND THE WORLD, RED NOSE RESPONSE IS NEEDED MORE THAN EVER.

When the tornado hit Greensburg, Kansas, one of our own Red nose Responders found herself in the thick of things.  Her parents lived in Greensburg and she did herself at once time.  She frantically rushed there only to find that familiar streets were impassable or unrecognizable.  We will never forget the Rita “Dizzy” Winter’s story.

Rita’s frequent communication with the Board of Red Nose Response gave us a birds-eye-view, almost a daily journal of what it was like to live through the first steps of recovery, relocation, loss and grieving.  We heard of not just her family’s struggle, but those of an entire town that was literally wiped off the map.  Rita could have focused on just providing her parents with relief, but she turned her attention to their community.  She recognized that clowning in the aftermath of this disaster wasn’t necessarily appropriate, but she still wanted to bring joy.  One example of what she did was to hand out a simple rose to all of the mothers she could find to lift their spirits around Mother’s day.

Rita’s story is an example of how one person can make a difference.  The Red Nose Response Board also responded.  A large box of Hug a Bears, donated by the AT&T South Chapter Pioneers Disaster Team, was shipped out along with RNR stickers.

Two months later, the recovery goes on slowly.  When all is said and done and Rita has had time to reflect back on her very personal experience with this disaster, there will be many practical suggestions for future responses.  Red Nose Response will then share them with you.

RNR clowns in New York did respond, as did others around the country.  How can we help?  Clowns planned, on short notice, a fundraising event and decked themselves out on a hot and steamy day.  They made balloons, provided face painting and games for kids, and even ran a bake sale.  In the end, they collected more than they expected and sent it to those in need.

In a disaster, what would you do?  If I contacted you, would you respond?  Or, would you sit by the television set and watch what is going on?  Or would you “Jump right in” and do something positive?  At our next meeting I would like to touch on this subject.  We should be ready in a minutes notice to put something together to raise funds, and various other things to help people in a disaster.
