THE ORANGE COUNTY PUPPETRY GUILD

Last Month I went to a meeting of THE ORANGE COUNTY PUPPETRY GUILD.  I enjoyed it so very much that I joined the club.  They hold their meetings the first Tuesday of the month.  The President is Lois Harmeyer and last month we all made a ghost marionette puppet.  This month we will be making a caterpillar rod puppet.  They are a very active group and every meeting has a “hands on” workshop.  And the members are very friendly talking about puppets and such and you learn from each of them.  Anyone who has an interest in puppets should be a part of this club.  You will learn LOTS, which will enhance your gigs.

It is held on the 1st Tuesday of the month at:  Buena Park Moose Lodge/8651 Knott Avenue/Buena Park, CA  90621 (Between Crescent & Lincoln on the west side of the street).  Come early had have dinner at the Moose Lodge for only $3 (THE FOOD IS SUPERB!).  The food is served from 5:30PM-7: 30PM.  And 7PM is the “Get Acquainted” time and the meeting starts at 7:15PM.  You can call me Pam (562/431-5785) or John (714/827-4407 or Lois (626/358-2637).  Tell them you are a Funny Business clown.  Try one meeting and see if it is for you.  You won’t regret it!

WITH MORE & MORE DISASTERS HAPPENING AROUND THE WORLD, RED NOSE RESPONSE IS NEEDED MORE THAN EVER.

Fires hit Southern California and clowns did get involved.  A few were from RED NOSE RESPONSE and the rest just joined in and assisted where needed.  Many of the San Diego All-Star Clowns did get involved and assisted as needed.  And if any other clowns were involved in that area or any other areas, a huge thanks you from Red Nose Response.

TWINKLES d’ KLOWN with BOO-BOO went to the ORANGE SHOW evacuation center in Riverside, which was, just 11 minutes from BOO-BOO’s house.  We were there for a number of days assisting as needed.  And one morning I had my nephew’s rabbit Powder in the parking lot and the evacuated adults and children pet and held Powder.  And one evening they had a band and TWINKLES d’ KLOWN and some of the children danced with the music. And BOO-BOO and the adults where cheering us on LOUDLY from the “peanut gallery”.

We not only clowned around but also were shoulders to cry on (a woman from Running Springs cried on my shoulder for ½ hour), prayed with people and did whatever the Red Cross & Salvation Army needed at any time.  Five huge trash bags of NEW stuffed animals were donated.  One of the Red Cross people asked us if we could help.  “These are stuffed animals.  We do not want them to go to the stuffed animal shelter to be stuffed away.  Can you find them homes here?”  And we passed them out to the children who had been there for 5 days. What a joy for the children and us.

And on Halloween from 2:30PM - 4:30PM Wall-Mart came in. They had tables set up in rows with things at each table that the children could either to do or to put in a plastic container to keep.  They had an area that had costumes of all sizes and each child got a costume.  They then had drawings and children and adult won some great gifts.  And the evening was “open” so TWINKLES d’ KLOWN went into the one Quonset hut and in one are she took out her ukulele and played camp songs and the children and adults sang along.  And someone wanted some Christian music also (one woman wanted faith) so that was played also.  And basic songs that people knew were played.  People could forget for a while with the sing along, dance and act CRAZY!

I have been talking for a few years trying to get clowns statewide to become involved with RED NOSE RESPONSE.  Most did not feel the need to be involved as California had no disasters and such going on.  Well, now that we had fires in Southern California, clowns began getting involved and helping during the disasters.  And I have been getting calls from clowns up and down the state to become involved with RED NOSE RESPONSE.  This disaster WOKE UP the clowns.

So I will be at the WRCA Clown Convention in Laughlin Nevada and will be doing recruitment for RED NOSE RESPONSE statewide.  I hope after the fires, that more clowns will REALLY decide to become a part of RED NOSE RESPONSE.  As the clowns that got involved during the fires now know, WE DID MAKE A DIFFERENCE!  Step up to the plate and become a part of RED NOSE RESPONSE!
