Greetings from the Prez Box

Hello everyone. What a great start to a new year. As I have been talking to friends, family and of course, you clowns. I am so surprised how many people have decided not to make resolutions this year. I know in my case, it about doing what's right regardless of the promises we make. This has been a slow start to a year for us with Super Bowl Sunday being one of the really first events that we really have to do, but then in February it starts all over again getting ready for week long programs, as well as many nights of rehearing and trying out new skits and routines and as it used to be said "pounding the pavement" . This year is now rolling to a great start. Which leads me to recapture last months meeting and bring you the exciting news for our upcoming meetings.

Last month was a great time of learning and seeing one of the greatest challenges for some of our First of May clowns. It was a great thrill to see two of our members and expert clowns demonstrate the techniques that they use. Edgar AKA KIWI demonstrated how he accomplishes his auguste face and what a style he has for those of you who video tape his technique, hold on to that tape what a great teaching and lesson on color and technique and costuming. We also had Curt AKA HAPPY demonstrate his tramp clown techniques and boy did he make that look to simple. With very limited colors, black, white, and auguste and when he added the touch of blush around the cheekbones(which many tramp clowns don't add) it added a great touch to match a large hobo nose. The simplicity of the derby and no added wig made this a fun and very easy character to accomplish. I was so impressed I started to work on my tramp clown We have now added anew couple to our set of characters know as "PENNYLESS and HAPPY" and I can't wait to debut them in May. Two First of May clowns where aided in creating new faces unique for them "Spangle the Clown" who also joined the club on his first visit and was helped in creating a White face " for his red white and blue character was so grateful for all the help he received. Adriana (Lamparia) was so pretty that her husband asked her not to take off her new clown face cause she was so pretty and her baby daughter was just as impressed at how pretty her mom looked. Thanks to everyone for making last month one of the funnest and rewarding class we have ever had.

Marcela "Mama Clown" Murad

Born in Colombia, South America and a resident of South Florida for the past 36 years, Marcela is recognized as one of America's premiere children entertainers. A two-time recipient of the Clown of the Year Award from the South East Clown Association, she is known for her lively personality and her natural ability for dealing with kids. As an Artist-In-Residence for Clowns of America International, she travels internationally teaching all aspects of clowning.

Marcela is editor and publisher of Face Painting International Magazine dedicated to promoting the art of face painting worldwide, owner of Silly Farm Products and the producer of the annual Face Painting International Convention.

A former columnist for Laughmakers Magazine and recently the Funny Paper, she is a published author of several books on the arts of clowning and face painting. In 1997 she was featured on the nationally syndicated "Cristina Show". Visitors to the Ron Lee Clown Museum in Las Vegas, Nevada can view a display of her career as a children entertainer. She was selected to be one of eight worldwide clowns chosen to have their character immortalized in the form of a fine porcelain doll of their image called the "Center Ring Collection".

The Miami Herald named her a "Hometown Hero" for her work with the underprivileged children and the Associated Press called her an "Angel of Cheer" for her dedication to bringing cheers to those affected by Hurricane Andrew.

Marcela believes that one of the nicest things we can give to children are happy memories. All Star Events, a company she founded and is now operated by her sister Claudia Banks, have been providing quality entertainment to the South Florida area for the last 23 years. Silly Farm Products manufactures and distributes clown supplies to the trade.

A volunteer helping a wide variety of children programs, she attributes her success to love and respect for the art of clowning and face painting. Her goals are to continue being influential in elevating her professions to new dimensions through education and the development of new products.

COAI NEWS by Candy

What fun I had at the Extravaganza up in San Jose in last month! The instructors were great! My favorite class I have to say was Mama Clowns and how she does Birthday Parties. Lots of good ideas from Connie "Cuddles" Lyons and Dena "Flossie" Piraino too! Of course it was a treat to meet Karen Bell and see and play with her wonderful props too!. There were lots of clown supplies and I made sure I got what I needed, (if not more. . .).
Now some great news on the COAI front! First of all let me tell all first time conventioneers that each region is having a raffle. You will find the information on the 8th page of the January/February New Calliope. If anyone is going to the COAI convention in April and this is their first time, make sure to fill out the form and get it to your regional Vice President, (me) before March 1st. At the convention's banquet, one name will be drawn from each region and $100 will be given to each name drawn! Eleven in all! Also, if there is anyone who would like to bring their "Junior Joey" and would like to find out about a scholarship, it is still possible to get one, but at this time, the Junior Joey, (or ANY clown wanting to get a scholarship for that matter!) must fill out and pay for registration, then fill out a scholarship form and send it in by March 15th. If the scholarship is approved at the April Board meeting, then the attendee will be reimbursed.
The Junior Joey program is coming along nicely and there will be some nice perks too! Chrissy "Beary" Will, (my OWN Junior Joey) and I have been working on getting some great supplies together for the "Kazoo Band" class that James Cunningham, myself and several other Junior Joey committee members will be teaching. Read more of what is going on in the next couple of New Calliopes and I sure hope to see a lot of you in Corpus Christi, Texas this coming April! Ahoy Mateys!!
