Pom-Pom's Patter

Hi Fellow Joeys,

last months event was making things from beads, we made two kinds of poodles, a reindeer, snow flakes, a cross and a star. We all had a great time. We want to thank Jim Militello for teaching us the step by step directions for making animals out of beads. We also want to thank Dale Haswell for making sure that everyone got the beads they needed and understood what they needed to do.

Ichi Michi, Boo Boo and I were lucky enough to be able to go to David Ginn's Kidbiz workshop in L.A. It was a lot of fun and very informative. I got some great new magic tricks. After the workshop Boo Boo, her friend Alice and I went to see Aga Boom at CSULB. We couldn't stop laughing.

We are still looking for a new treasurer so if you would like the positron or if you know someone who does let the board know.

hugs, Pom-Pom

This Month's Meeting

Randi Burton

Randi Burton, of Nothing Can Topit, will share her secrets of costuming and magic pockets for clowns at the February 8 meeting of Funny Business. She started out in the 1980’s designing clown suits for “Clowning Around” a Seal Beach company that sent Magic Clowns to perform at parties and functions. She also performed as a magic clown as well as costume designer, and is a magician member at the Magic Castle. From working with the magic clowns for several years, Randi discovered the secrets to making costumes cooler, tips for cleaning your costume, and a myriad of places to install secret pockets for props. Lecture notes, busker’s servants and jackets for converting to breakaway costumes will be available for sale.

Clown Sneakers – Customized!

For those who do not want to or do not have the money to spend on the professional clown shoes.  Then you can customize your own clown shoes.

First, go to a thrift shop and purchase the largest pair of sneakers that you can get.  Do not get white as they get dirty too fast and look awful.

Trace a cardboard pattern that corresponds to the sneakers toe area.  Use the pattern to cut out a swatch from some of your “extra” clown material.  Remember to always purchase lots of “extra” clown material for things like this.  Use “photometric spray”. It is a general upholstery adhesive sold at upholstery stores.  It bonds well and can be peeled off, resized and used again.

On the side of your sneakers, take a glitter pen and write your clown name.  You can also use lace along the eyelets or even around the edge above the sole and/or around the top of the sneakers.  Use colors that correspond with your clown colors.

For different holidays, add other attachments as follows:  (1) Christmas – Bells (2) Chanukah – Dreidels (3) Easter – small plastic bunnies, plastic Easter eggs or plastic crosses (4) flag day/patriotic holiday’s – the flags on a tooth pick or flag stickers (5) Halloween – small pumpkin bells, small plastic witches, ghosts and such (6) a theme party – put the theme on the sneakers such as pirates – gold doubloons

and basically. . . .use your imagination and you can do some pretty “cool” clown shoes.  We could have the members decorate sneakers and have a contest at one of the club meetings.
