The Great Southern California Shake-Out

On December 19th our club was part of the three clubs holiday party that was held at Seal Beach Leisure World.  The clubs involved were, the Cancer Support Group of Seal Beach Leisure World, our Funny Business club, and The Joy Klowns of Seal Beach Leisure World.  Some of the people with cancer in the support group asked if the clowns in their clubs if they could come dressed as clowns to cheer them up during the holiday season.  Well, TWINKLES d’ KLOWN, Diamond Lil' and LU-C-LUV came as clowns and were loved by all.  We had close to 100 people in attendance at the party.  We were running out of seats and we had to bring in more of them.  Of all the people in attendance we only had a mere FIVE Funny Business members at the party.  All members that were not at the party, you missed a memorable and fun evening.

The potluck was YUMMY and Diamond Lil’ made two turkey with all of the fixins’, and Virginia of the cancer support group brought a LARGE ham.  Others brought their specialties, which were enjoyed by all.

Diamond Lil’ arranged for the entertainment which was SUPERB, to say the least.  We had the “NO NAME BAND” of Leisure world who played throughout the evening.   Most of the band members were part of bands that were famous during “the big band” era.  We sang along with most of their songs, which was fun.  We then had opera tenor Dan Galliani sing.  He had studied voice in New York and Rome and has performed in La Boheme, Tosca and Madam Butterfly.  His voice was amazing.

And then Deanna of the cancer support group came dressed as her FAMOUS character, “LADY KONG”.  For those who have watched women’s wrestling on television, or who have ever been to a game, you will probably remember seeing her.  And her voice was also beautiful and she also did some singing.

Lillian “Diamond Lil” Loring did the majority of work on the party and we want to thank her for all that she did to make a very memorable and fun evening.  THANK YOU LILLIAN!    - Vice-President Pam House -

Holiday Party from the heart

I’m sure that everyone was busy “clowning around” during the holidays.  I know that I was.  On December 20th there was a Christmas party at “Travel Country Trailer Park” in Garden Grove.  DIAMOND Lil’ and TWINKLES d’ KLOWN were there from Funny Business as were some clowns from the Volunteer Clowns of Orange County.  We had Doc and his men from Cactus Garden’s serving the food (a full holiday meal).  And Santa was there and the children got toys.  Our club sponsored a family and we were supposed to bring our “gifts” to the holiday party.  Only two of us provided the gifts so I put in much more for the family.  It was a FUN time for all that attended and the families were so appreciative of the party.  They are mostly one-parent families with many of the fathers in prison.  We support this every year.

And on Monday, December 22nd, Frank Garcia and his WE GIVE THANKS, INC. non-profit committee had his annual special toy giveaway and visit from Santa.  The parking lot at his restaurant is not big enough so we were at Nuno Brothers Marked in Santa Ana a few minutes from where All-American Balloon use to be where we held our meetings.  I got up that morning to a DOWNPOUR of rain.  I called Frank Garcia to see if it was canceled.  His reply was that he and his crew had been there since 5AM setting up and “the show must go on.”  So TWINKLES d’ KLOWN got ready and headed over there.  It was suppose to be from 11AM to 2PM but we had LOTS of children so it ended at 5PM.  I was told that there were some T.V. cameras there filming the event for the evening news.  But I was tooooo busy to notice.

I took my trusty “decorated umbrella that I had bought at a clown club meeting from Boo-Boo (thank you Boo-Boo) and began walking the line in the rain.  The line went to the end of the parking lot and then went way back into a tract of homes almost to the end of the VERY LONG block.  I walked back and forth and at some point, the rain stopped.

We ended up serving 4,500 hot dogs and had other food for the people in attendance also.  And the looks on the children’s faces (12-yrs. old and under – low income & homeless) when they received their toy was something I will never forget.  They were so appreciative.  And we ran out of hot dog buns at one point and a Bimbo Bakery truck was driving by saw that and turned around and unloaded their buns and gave them to us.  They went back to their store and brought back some more buns for us.  And, in the mean time, people that drove by saw we were out of buns, and stopped and gave whatever hot dog buns they had just bought from the market.  People knew this was the Frank Garcia “WE GIVE THANKS, INC.” event so they helped in their own way.

At our January meeting, let us know what volunteer clown gigs you were involved in during the holidays.  – Pam House –
