GUINNESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS

Before the April meeting of the Los Angeles Fellowship of Christian Magicians (LAFCM) began at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, member Joe Marotta escaped 411 times from handcuffs in one hour.  He broke the Guinness world record that had been escaping from 301 handcuffs in one hour.  Talking to him at the Southern California Creative Arts Conference he stated that “I am still sore but healing and will receive a certificate from Guiness in the mail”.  WAY TO GO JOE!         - Pam House -

COAI News by Candy

Guess What??
It’s getting closer, and closer, and are you ready to celebrate?  International Clown Week!  Has anyone written to the Mayor for a Clown Proclamation?  It was approved by the President of the United States, so why would a town Mayor not want to acknowledge International Clown Week??  It’s not too late, just get to writing your request from the town Mayors around you, plan out your events, keep records and pictures in a scrap book. Make sure that you reference Clowns of America International; make COAI your number one reference, have pictures of you playing and advertising what a good clown is about!  COAI wants to see COAI clowns being the best COAI clowns they can be and have it all in a pretty package!  After you have done as many clown week activities as you can possibly do and have it all recorded and bundled up in a pretty clown week package and send them to the Clown Week Chair. Our new clown week chair person is Pastor Jay Phillips.  Keep watching in the next coming New Calliopes for his name to be in the Front Page of the magazine.  All entrees are due by October 1st!  Wouldn’t it be great to see the southwest take this prize??  Individual clowns may go for the individual Charlie awards and COAI 100 percent alleys can submit for the Alley Charlie Awards.
COAI is still looking for a 100 percent COAI alley to bid on the 2009 convention.  When you get the next New Calliope, be sure to read about how MO Stuff prepared, bid and put together the 2007 convention, it has a lot of eye opening information that just may help your alley make that decision to finally host one here in the South West region!  I have been asked by so many South West clowns “Why don’t we have a COAI convention here in the South West region?”  Well, it has to be bid on by a 100 percent COAI alley, so what are you waiting for??  Let’s show the rest of the planet of clowns what the South West can do!!  It’s all just too exciting for me!!
Your SW Regional Vice President, Candy Will

RECAP OF THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CREATIVE ARTS CONFERENCE

The Los Angeles Fellowship of Christian Magicians (LAFCM) & the Orange County Gospel Arts Studio presented a two-day conference (April 27th & 28th) that taught a wide spectrum of Creative techniques for sharing the Gospel that was held At Faith Community Church in West Covina.
There were hands on instruction in Gospel illusion, storytelling, puppetry, music, clowning, mime & drama, balloon twisting, the art of ventriloquism, writing humor, to name some of the classes. And SOME of the wide array of instructors were as follows:  Ralph Dewy/Gospel balloon artist from Texas, Mary Rice Hopkins who is known throughout the Christian worldwide community as a songwriter, author & concert artist who had along with herself Darcie Maze with her unique puppets, Brenda “Flower” Marshall who is a former COAI President & highly respected instructor, Johnny Ace Palmer/World champion Magician & close up magic performer, “Elgregoe” (Gregg Britt) with his son “Nickelby” (Nick) who hailed from New Zeland and are magicians who have won between themselves  5 national awards, Pastor Rob Watkins who is a ventriloquist and LAFCM President,  San Francisco’s Bob Bailey (“Tamaka”) sharing the art of stage illusion, Bruce & Tambra Hofstetter with their Lost and Found puppets, OZ and Wilde the popular comedy Gospel performers, superb mime David Willsey – “the drama guy”, Barney Kinard a nationally respected children’s evangelist/teacher  to name a few.
There was a full array of back-to-back classes for the two days with a Friday EVENING VARIETY SHOW that was VERY PROFESSIONAL.  During lunch & dinner an on-going parade of talented close-up artists presented their mysteries for everyone’s enjoyment along with hands-on sessions during lunch on Friday & Saturday teaching how to make & perform two professional magic tricks in a workshop setting (cut, paste & create).
This conference takes the place of the now “defunct” yearly  ACE (Association of Christian Entertainers) Conference.  It will be held around the same time next year (I will keep everyone updated) and in the same location.  It was well worth attending and I worked registration/ being a “gopher” also and attended many of the classes while being there on both days.  President Wendy was also in attendance.          –Pam House -
