Next meeting June 8, 2009 7PM

Hi there, fellow Joeys,

REMEMBER! We are having our election of officers at our June meeting. What office are you planning to run for? You can only run for one office, per the by-laws. So decide which one you want to run for and do it at our meeting. Our election of officers is in May but we did not have a quorum at the meeting. Your club is only as good as the people who are involved in it.

Hello Funny Business Members! I am really looking forward to having a Clowns of America International convention here in Orange County in 2011! The director of Conventions, Pat Roeser is looking into hotels in the area right now! As soon as I hear what the next step is, I will let you all know. Also, in the next election year, I plan to step out of the Regional Vice President position and run for the Executive Vice President. Please keep that in mind when the time comes to vote, I will need all of your support! Thanks and see you on Monday! Butterscotch

Toxic Cakes Mixes

Since clowns do birthday parties, we are exposed to birthday cakes.  But other such mixes are also involved and COULD BE toxic.

A student at HBHS (high school) had pancakes this week and it almost became fatal.  His Mom (registered nurse) made him pancakes, dropped him off at school and headed to play tennis.  She never takes her cell phone on the court but did this time and her son called to say he was having trouble breathing.  She told him to go to the nurse immediately and proceeded to call school and alert the nurse.  The nurse called the paramedics and they were there in 3 minutes and worked on the boy all the way to the hospital.  He came so close to dying.  Evidently this is more common than I ever knew.  Check the expiration dates on packages and boxes like pancakes, and cake mixes that have yeast which over time develop spores.  Apparently, the mold that forms in old mixes CAN BE TOXIC.  Throw away ALL OUTDATED pancake mixes, cake mixes, Bisquick, Brownie mixes, bread mixes, cookie mixes, etc., you have in your home.

For mold to gain access to a food product, the foodstuff has to be exposed to its spores.  Pancake mix, etc., cocooned in a unbleached wax paper, plastic or foil pouch within its outer package wouldn’t have this contact and SHOULD still be safe no matter how old it gets.  However, mix sold unpouched in cardboard boxes or paper sacks could likely be at risk even if the boxes or sacks haven’t been previously opened because packaging would not necessarily keep dampness our and mold thrives in a damp environment.  But if you DON’T have a mold allergy, then you will probably be O.K.  But WHEN IN DOUBT, THROW IT OUT!  This has been verified but you can check this website for yourself at
                     http://www.snopes.com/medical toxins/pancakes.asp.

I felt that this was worthy of an article in the newsletter as this could be so dangerous.  Pass this onto your family members, relatives, friends and whomever you feel uses mixes with yeast in them.   –Pam House-
