MARCH SPEAKER
Candy Will will
be teaching some basics for face painting, how to paint using circles,
squares, rectangles and triangles. Everyone who wants to paint should
bring their face painting tools and be prepared to learn and share ideas.
This should be a fun night of face painting and sharing!

Our Valentine's Evening Meeting
Our meeting was held on Valentine's Day &
those who did not attend really missed out on a very informative lecture
by our own Wendy Olson. Her topic was "Theme Parties" and
she brought many items with her. She did not have enough time to show
all of the things that she brought along but I'm sure we can talk her
into coming back for a continuation of her topic. We really did learn
"tons of things" that night. We have a huge thank you for
Wendy and also to her daughter Sandy and friend who assisted Wendy.
She went all out with the things that she brought and she even brought
along chocolate dipped strawberries, which were yummy! A great big thank
you to Mannassara's Strawberry Farm, 3210 E. La Palma, Anaheim
for donating the strawberries
We also have a big thank you to All-American
Balloon for being there that evening. It was Valentine's Day and
the staff had made their own plans for the evening. Juan was nice enough
to stay instead of taking his wife out to dinner as planned. Thank you
for being there for us Juan. You are appreciated

This N' That From President Pam
Think about this. . . .in hospitals a touch
is therapeutic. It is skin to skin and a touch helps in healing. Many
white-faced clowns that go to hospitals do not wear their gloves. I
think there is a real strong case for gloveless clowns. What do you
think? But remember one fact; always wash your hands before touching
any patient. This is a safety measure for the patient and the germs
that you carry. What about the magical coloring book that many clowns
use and many of the kids have already seen it? Buy two identical coloring
books but pull out all of the pages of one of them (big lot's are less
expensive & the 99 cent store). Now when you hold it up most kids
won't recognize it and you will be well into your trick before they
realize that they may have seen the trick done before. And you can also
attach a plastic sheet to the back of the "trick" coloring
book. Buy a "birthday certificate" from a party shop or make
one on your computer (print master or print shop programs work well).
Put the child's name and birth date on it. Slip the certificate into
the plastic sheet. At the end of the coloring book trick, turn the book
over and there is the certificate, which you give to the birthday child.
This makes a nice finale for your show.
A QUESTION THAT IS HARD TO ANSWER: " WHY ARE INSALTED CRACKERS
STILL CALLED SALTINES?"

Fear Of Clowns Is Real!
Clowns really do not want to scare children,
or adults for that matter. But there are children that grow up with
a true fear of clowns. The clinical name for the fear is called "COULRAPHOBIA."
The question to all of us clowns is how can we prevent children from
really being scared of us?
The first thing that we have to remember
is that when we deal with children, we adults are "giant-sized"
to the children. When you deal with the children, remember to come down
to their level physically. Try to remember how you felt at that age
looking up at adults. Sit on the floor or get on your knees
The thing to really remember - - NEVER FORCE
A FRIGHTENED CHILD TO COME TO THE CLOWN. Many of you have had the parents
FORCE the scared child to go to you, the clown, if only for a picture.
Other parents say, "They have to be not afraid of you (the clown)
and getting them to go to you will have them get over the fear of clowns.
WRONG!
One thing you can do as a clown is to also
act frightened of the child and explaining to the parents that you "get
really scared by little children when they are frightened." It
shows the fear to the child and then the child is "more brave"
than the clown. The clown is scared and lets the child off the hook
and focused on the clown. And it also allows the clown to "lower
himself" and thus raise the child up. But it then gets the message
across to the parents that when the child is ready, they then will come
to the clown and it will be a happy experience that everyone wanted
to begin with. If the parents still "DON'T GET IT", then you,
as a clown, have to back off telling the parents you do not want to
scare the child.
And last but not least, think of your face
and make-up. You want to entertain children and not frighten them. The
purpose of the clown make-up is to amplify your own natural features.
And finally - JUST HAVE FUN!

BOB BERKY - This "Theatrical clown
with extraordinary class" has entertained audiences all over the
world. A quote from the Hong Kong Festival reads " Laughter it
was. Unadulterated, uninhibited roars of hysteria, mind you...and the
magician: who transcended all age, culture and language barriers to
reduce the lot of us to a convulsing mass was Bob Berky."
If you are interested in seeing Bob Berky
at La Mirada Theatre you can purchase seats on-line (see
link above) or by calling the Box Office at (562) 944-9801 or (714)
994-6310.
We will be in ORCHESTRA Row R for the 1:30 show. Tickets
are $8.00 each with $1.00 per ticket postage and handling.

The Food At Each Meeting
Do you enjoy eating at the
meetings? This is done because many of the members come directly from
work and do not have time to eat dinner before the meeting. And the
meeting ends at 9pm and people would really be hungry. We need you,
the members to volunteer monthly for the food. It doesn't have to
be a fancy spread, or it can if you wish. We just need other people
to provide the food for the meeting. Once, again, nobody signed up
to provide the food for our march meeting. So Paulette Rosen will
is bringing the food. We need you to sign up to provide the food for
the meeting. If enough people do sign up throughout the year, you
would only have to bring food once or twice for the year. That is
not a lot to ask from our members. And remember, "your club is
only as good as each and every one of you make it".

COAI NEWS by Candy
Hello Everyone,
Clowns of America International is a great organization to belong to
for several reasons, but one of the best reasons to belong is receiving
the New Calliope Magazine every two months for the year. The yearly
cost, ($30 for the first year, $25 every year after that) is well worth
the cost alone. The New Calliope is packed with wonderful articles about
different kinds of clowning ideas, which may include ideas for face
painting, how to handle children at a birthday party, parade ability
ideas plus many other helpful ideas.
COAI offers insurance plus help with starting a clown alley.
It has many programs to promote clowning so that great clowning is encouraged
by every COAI member.
If you are not a member and are interested in finding our more, please
see me at the next meeting or check out the COAI website at: www.coai.org.
See you at the meeting!
