Wise Words from Wendy

Hello everyone! We had a wonderful time with Ben Hanson, Executive Producer of StreetBeat.biz. He was funny and very informative. Ben has a masters in music, and it showed. We must admit, he had more rhythm than we could keep up with. It was a lot of fun learning new beats, techniques, listening skills and the history of stomping and the Rhythmic Path. He brought a new avenue within the performing arts. You can see his picture playing his heart out. He also teaches at a performing art school in LA for the poor; and teaches kids at schools around Ca. that would normally not get attention. If you missed last month’s class, well, you missed a good one.
This month is our annual election; we encourage everyone to run for office and  vote. It is also time for everyone to pay their dues for the year. Funny Business membership is $18.00 and mandatory COAI membership is $25.00. Funny Business will pay the extra $5.00 for new members of COAI.
We are having a Flea Market this Mon. Everyone that has something to sell, that’s a member and needs a table; please come... $5 for members  non members are $10.
I will be at a Convention and working over the week end, but back will be back on Monday.
We are having "Mister Balloon Man" in June. He has a new tape out, never seen before unique balloon twisting techniques for under $10.00; with over 40 creations. He has kits for $15.00. He really gives his things away to teach others how to balloon. He loves to balloon and will sit with you until you get it. He has been written up in the paper as, a man with a heart of gold. So don't  forget to bring your cash and  a friend; they won't want to miss this and neither will YOU!!!!! Give him a Big Welcome to Funny Business. Let it shine,
Your Prez Wendy

COAI News by Candy

Well, I’m back from the COAI International convention that was held in Springfield Missouri, and PHEW am I pooped.  BUT it is a good pooped to say the least.  >From the moment I got there, it was non stop work, from 2 ½ days of board meetings, to preparing the Junior Joey classes, the dealer show where we as the board dressed as hillbilly clowns and told hillbilly jokes between each vendors display.  (And some of those jokes were ummm, well I won’t go there….) then meet your representative where I talked to at least four Southwest members.  At the general meeting many things were taken care of and the juniors are now allowed to have their own alleys!
Anyway, the MOStuff Alley did a great job for being brand new alley!  They jammed packed each day with so many classes it would make your head spin, and they added about three more of their own competitions too!  The juniors were AWSOME as usual and this year it was 4 BOYS!  They sure kept us on our toes!  The theme night party was a Hillbilly party (of course) and they had music, karaoke, dancing and a “Fill the Outhouse with Clowns” contest that was pretty funny!  Banquet night the juniors received their Red Nose Critique Awards and they all received a standing ovation!  I had very little time to stop and breathe and it was all worth it.
Now, is everyone getting ready for Clown Week in August?  I really want to see the SW region become more prominent turning in their work for such a worthwhile award!  I know the southwest clowns are the greatest!!  Let’s get in some “Clowns of the Year” applications and ‘Excellence in Clowning” applications too!  100 percent alleys that do a monthly Newsletter should be sending their newsletters in to the New Calliope Editor for the “Best of the Press” award also.  There are so many recognitions that COAI bestows on their members, lets be the top of the heap!

GO SOUTHWEST!

WITH MORE & MORE DISASTERS HAPPENING AROUND THE WORLD, RED NOSE RELIEF IS NEEDED MORE THAN EVER.

More help is needed in the following area.  Charles Douglas is the artistic director of PALEF.  And PALEF it the “Performing Arts For Life & Education Foundation” in Los Angeles.  And Charles is also known as “Chucko”.
He and his troupe of youngsters are performing a play this summer that is going to feature a variety of clowns.  They are looking for make-up kits and clown shoes.  This may be the time for you to recycle your make-up or you have an old pair of clown shoes that are just hanging around.  Please box them up and send them to:          PALEF, Attn:  Charles Douglas, 5030 South Harvard Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA  90062-2403
Your donations are tax deductible and you will really be helping some GREAT children.  And for more information about PALEF please check out their website at www.palef.org. Anything you can do to assist would DEFINITELY be appreciated.  Pass this onto any other clown & clubs outside of our FUNNY BUSINESS clown club no matter how close or far away (out of state even) they may be.  Summer is just around the corner so put on your thinking caps and decided to help out this worthwhile cause.  You will feel good about what you have done.  And Red Nose Response is there to help out others less fortunate and make others feel good also.   -  Pam House, California State Coordinator, Red Nose Response - THANK YOU in advance!
