Next meeting Monday, May 11, 2009 7PM

Hi there, fellow Joeys,

I want to thank Princess Pipsqueak for her wonderful magic show. She performed many tricks that I have never seen before.
It is with great sadness that I announce that our terrific president BooBoo has stepped down for health reasons. We have really enjoyed her enthusiasm and appreciate all her hard work and hope that she is feeling better soon. In accordance with our bylaws the Funny Business board will appoint a president until our elections this month.

Why Worry?

Today is the tomorrow we worried about yesterday. ~Author Unknown

Grief has limits, whereas apprehension has none. For we grieve only for what we know has happened, but we fear all that possibly may happen. ~Pliny the Younger

Bump-a-nose, Pom-Pom

This Month's Meeting

Pom-Pom will do a program on hospital clowning. She has volunteered at a children's hospital for 20 years and just got her 200 volunteer hours pin at Anaheim Memorial Hospital for cheering up adults. She has also taught a class for clown-wanabees at the Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in Whittier. She will talk about the routines that she does as well as talking about considerations for clowning in a hospital or nursing home. Please bring a bandana or soft napkin.

Hope you will come to the meeting!

COAI by Candy

Hi COAI members!

I'm BACK!! What a fun time at the COAI convention in Indiana I had! I was there just in time for the fireworks that started the Kentucky Derby Run for the Roses and of course the theme for the convention was "Run for the Noses"! The classes were informative and the competitions were competitive. Even with the loss of one our long time computer experts that ran the competition sign ups each year, Chris Hermann who died of a heart attack at 48, we came through getting everything done for the conventioneers. The camaraderie is always the best part, catching up with old friends and this year there 5 junior joeys, and teaching them is always fun! What a great group of kids, the future is well in hand for clowning! Next year it will be in Houston, Texas and the theme will be "A Little Bit of Country, A Little Bit of Rock and Roll". The Texas clowns really know how to put on a party so try to get your reservations in soon. Since COAI has had hardly any response on getting COAI alleys to bid on conventions, we as the board have decided to run the convention for 2011 and we would like to have it near Disneyland, here in Orange County. The board will run the convention but we will need volunteers to form committees and help run it. I will keep you all up as the information comes in. See you all soon! Butterscotch

Red Nose Response Logo

RED NOSE RESPONSE in another part of the world is doing wonderful things. “Clown Therapists” make Italian quake kids smile again was the headline on April 8th. In L’Aquila Italy there is a somber Italian camp for earthquake survivors. But a clown with a red nose is an unexpected sight but Frances Calsolaro says his monkeying around for newly homeless kids is serious. Weaving around a fluffy pink duster & falling over in mock dismay while playing with giggling children “Francis the clown” says coaxing laughter out of kids left homeless by Monday’s quake is more effective than any therapy. “This is not funny business, its actually very serious”, said Calsolaro, dressed in a baggy pinstriped suit, a colorful jacket and a hat with a daisy stuck on it.

People don’t need someone sitting high up there telling them how to deal with sadness. Many more similar “clown therapists” came to cheer up the homeless in large blue tents in open-air camps in/around L’Aquila.

“When we came here, the camp was very silent, kids just quietly playing with each other said Federica Marinacci (clown name of “Nocciolina” which is peanut. But when they saw us, they all gathered around us and began laughing.” Fearful mothers also broke into a smile once they saw their children were laughing again after the terror of the quake Marinacci said.

More traditional therapists had also pitched up a tent in the camp as they set about helping grief stricken survivors and homeless, but the clown therapists appeared to have stolen the show.

Hearing this shows us the IMPACT we have as clowns. Just simple acts of “care and kindness” as a clown can do wonders for people who are hurting. You need to stop and think of how many people do you actually help as a clown? And you also have to think of anything negative that you do as a clown that can have an adverse effect on people. Do not take clowning lightly. When in clown, you have a responsibility to be “the best that you can be” and to uphold clowning in general. Saying this . . . . . . go out clowning and make people happy.
