Pom-Pom's Patter

Hi Fellow Joeys,
Ever wondered why we have our elections in May and why a new clown is called a First of May. This is from an email on the West Coast Facepainters Google Group.

According to legend, all clowns are born on May first, which is the reason why a rookie clown is known as a "First of May."
The month of May was traditionally the time when circuses made their season run, thus again rookie clowns are called "First of Mays."

According to veteran circus clown Jonathan Freddes: "A First of May is a first year person. In the old days they would open the season on the first of May in New York. If you made your second opening season you were no longer a first of May. They still use this term today."

I am pleased to announce that on May 1st the Circus Issue of American Face painter will be released. This issue boasts designs from Marcela Murad, Nick Wolfe, Brian Wolfe, Z, Joanne Conte, Kristi Darbi, Connie Lyons and more. These are great designs useful for any circus themed event, summer carnival or children's face painting in general.

Klinko's Kolumn

Hi Clowns, Spring is in the air.
It's time to clean out your clown closets and bring all your extra goodies to our annual swap meet in May. It's a great way to make a little extra cash and to make room for more new stuff.

It has been my pleasure to serve on the board as your Vice President this year. I want to personally thank Paulette and Pam for all their hard work! We would not be here without their help and support. I encourage each of you to take a baby step and run for a board position. Try it you might like it. Together we can keep Funny Business growing and keep the education going. I look forward to the new year!
See you in May,
Klinko

I’m BAAACCCKKK!
What a great convention the Texans put on! And my work with the Junior Joeys was spectacular! It is always nice when the juniors are so open to learning and perform so well. One of the juniors was actually a first of May but you wouldn’t have known it to see him perform. All in all, I worked my tail off but it was a good feeling to be a part of it all. Now, on to the next convention here is Orange County next year. Remember, anyone who helps and becomes a part of the committee will be a part of the $5.00 per entrant to be divided up between all the committee members after the convention. Also, make sure to get your registration in before the 1st of July at $150 before the rate goes up, and committee members will be allowed to compete. Don’t forget to vote for me as Treasurer when you get the next New Calliope. See you all at the next meeting with the applications in hand! Butterscotch

Stacey Anderson did her ‘BUBBLE SHOW” and explained all about it.  It was a very informative lecture and it much detail.  She talked about the following:
(a) You are never to use any 3-week old bubbles.  They do not work as they will not look good and not work well.
(b) You should become a character if you do a bubble show.  Examples are a FAIRY GOD MOTHER or a MAD SCIENTIST.
(C)  She showed how to blow bubbles through a PVC pipe.  Showed how to wear a glove, put a bubble on it, and then demonstrated how to manipulate the bubble on the glove.
(d) Have a bubble hoop (like a hula-hoop) and pull it up over the child with the liquid bubbles on it to make a bubble.  And she went into detail on how to do this.  This is a “SHOW STOPPER”.
(e) Put down a rug under your "bubble things” to protect the area you are working on.  Lowe’s has a rug for $17.
(f) Showed many different ideas on how to work with the bubbles to make a great show.  And once she started giving you ideas, your mind wandered to ideas that you could do and use in a bubble show.
(g) Have your bubble show last about 20 – 25 minutes.  Have background music when you do your show Stacey had music with drums, as in an African beat and it was very effective. (the music was from the Aga-Boom show that Stacey and I saw after the David Ginn Workshop -Pom-Pom)
